When looking at the connectivity options are available for an industrial vision application, today we are fortunate to have many options. With the large number of options available, users have the ability to pick and choose the right combination of bandwidth, the transmission length, data integrity, and customization their industrial camera application. The main objective of this paper is the comparison of two competing technologies, FireWire ® IEEE-1394 and GigE. These industrial camera technologies are used in a variety of applications including: Vision, Industrial Inspection, Food Processing, Monitoring, Medicine (microscopy), Bioscience, military, automotive, metrology, and more traffic.

FireWire ® or IEEE-1394 and is officially called, is a high interface bandwidth to the computers, peripherals and consumer electronics products. FireWire ® is based on a serial bus architecture similar to USB and is typically used to network digital video cameras with computers using the proprietary cables. The IEEE-1394 technology was created in the 1980s as a "digital technology designed to meet the growing demand for broadband communications for video. It was also designed to simplify and reduce the number of cables and connectors between devices. "(Hardin 2007)

FireWire ® There are two versions available, the IEEE1394.ay IEEE1394.b (unveiled October 2004). The difference between the two is that the new 1394.b offers 800 Mbps, while its predecessor 1394th offers 480 Mbps This increased bandwidth makes FireWire ® IEEE1394.ba competitor near Gigabit Ethernet (GigE), providing 1000 mbps.

Gigabit Ethernet (also called or GigE Vision GigE) is a camera interface industrial developed using the Gigabit Ethernet communication protocol. GigE is the first standard to allow the rapid transfer of 1000 Mbps of data using cables low-cost standard lengths up to 100 meters. A GigE industrial camera ultimately provides users faster data transfer and lengths compared to cable FireWire ®.

When comparing the two for a particular application, the industrial chamber FireWire ® is generally a better choice for most machine vision applications, due in part to the high degree of standardization of hardware, software interface, the computer interface, and reducing costs.

When used FireWire ® industrial cameras, users find that:

* Cables are less expensive (can be obtained from a local computer retailer),

* The standardized software interface for industrial cameras (DCAM or QDII) allows that any compatible camera to be operated by any compatible driver,

* There are several minimum cost frame grabber or connectivity problems because many computers are now including built FireWire ® ports

* PCI or PCMCIA interface FireWire ® can be purchased for under a hundred dollars to your local computer dealer if your computer does not have a building in the port ® FireWireÂ,

* Offers of maturity of software and standardization of the technology also makes FireWire ® IEEE1394 a good long term investment in future technology for implementation.
