Is it bad for 14k gold chain to be buffed a lot ?

I have never buffed the chain before but its getting worn out in the back near the clasp….I tried that liquid jewelry cleaner solution cleans the rest of it good. I dont know what buffing a chain involves but someone told me its not that good to do and wears away at the gold/metals thinning it out
